Statement on the Passing of Herbert S. Garten

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Herbert S. Garten, an inspiring and beloved member of the LSC community. He died Jan. 28th at the age of 96.

Herb was nominated to the LSC Board in 2003 by President George Bush and served seven years. He continued his efforts for LSC many years beyond that as a non-director member of several Board committees. He also served on LSC’s Leaders Council.

In 2009, the LSC Board renamed its Loan Repayment Assistance Program the Herbert S. Garten Loan Repayment Assistance Program in honor of Herb.

The retried chairman of the Fedder & Garten law firm in Owings Mills, Md., Herb was a past president of the Maryland State Bar Association and a life-long leader in encouraging lawyers to engage in pro bono civil legal services for the low-income.

Members of the LSC community will remember Herb not only for his many years of exemplary service but also for his gentle wit, engaging collegiality, and unyielding commitment to expanding access to justice to our country’s most vulnerable citizens.

We extend our condolences to Herb’s family and many friends.
