NC Chief Justice Parker Joins Five Regional Judges in Durham at LSC Forum on Civil Legal Aid

Washington, DC— North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Sarah Parker will join five distinguished judges from the Southeast at a forum on Civil Legal Aid at Duke University Fuqua School of Business on Monday, October 1.  The forum is being held in conjunction with a Legal Services Corporation Board of Directors meeting.

Joining Chief Justice Parker: Judge Allyson Duncan of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit, Chief Judge John C. Few of the South Carolina Court of Appeals, Justice S. Bernard Goodwyn of Virginia, Chief Justice Carol Hunstein of Georgia and Chief Justice Menis Ketchum of West Virginia.

They will address LSC Board members about the role of legal aid for the poor in safeguarding the fair administration of justice.  Harvard Law School Dean Martha Minow will moderate the panel, which will take place from 9-10:30 a.m. in the HCA Auditorium, 100 Fuqua Drive, in Durham.

The forum will also spotlight the civil legal needs of military veterans. George Hausen, executive director of Legal Aid of North Carolina, will be on a panel with: Will Gunn, general counsel for the U.S. Department of Veterans’ Affairs; Nan Heald, executive director of Pine Tree Legal Assistance, which maintains the national website www.StatesideLegal.org for military members, veterans and their families;  Kenneth Perri, executive director of  Legal Assistance of Western New York; and Nicole Perez, an attorney with the Bill Smith Homeless Veterans Project at the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles. Legal Services Corporation President James J. Sandman will moderate the panel, which will take place from 10:45 a.m. to noon.

LSC Board and committee meetings will take place on October 1 & 2 at the Hilton Durham Hotel, 3800 Hillsborough Road, in Durham.  Details regarding the board and committee meetings may be found in a notice published on the LSC website.  Members of the public who are unable to attend may listen to open sessions of the board and its committees by telephone, using the instructions in the notice.
