LSC to Honor Four Iowa Attorneys and Des Moines-Based Firm for Pro Bono Service

WASHINGTON – In recognition of their extraordinary commitment to equal justice, the national Legal Services Corporation (LSC) Board of Directors presented on July 21 its Pro Bono Service Award to four Iowans and the firm of Davis, Brown, Koehn, Shors & Roberts. The awards ceremony took place at 6p.m. at the Davis Brown law firm, 215 10th Street in Des Moines.
 
The 2014 LSC Pro Bono Service Award Reception was held in conjunction with LSC’s Board of Directors’ quarterly meeting.
 
Speakers at the event included LSC Board Chairman John G. Levi, Iowa State Bar Association President Joseph M. Feller, Davis Brown Law Firm Board of Directors President Gene R. La Suer,  and former LSC Board Chairman George Wittgraf.
 
Recipients of the Pro Bono Service Award are:
  • Davis Brown Law Firm, a Des Moines-based firm with a long history of pro bono service within Polk County and across Iowa. Since 2001, attorneys at the Davis Brown Law Firm have donated pro bono legal services to almost 250 clients through the Polk County Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project.
  • Steve Jackson, Sr., of Lynch Dallas P.C., a member of Iowa Legal Aid’s Volunteer Lawyers Project since 1994. He has recruited numerous volunteer lawyers to assist with the Family Law Intake Project and has donated nearly 500 hours of his own service.
  • Tommy Lynn Miller, a retired Iowa Legal Aid attorney who still volunteers on an-house basis with HELP Legal Assistance. Since 2004, she has donated over 10,000 hours of pro bono legal service and assisted over 2,000 clients.
  • Brian Peters, a Dubuque attorney with Kintzinger Law Firm PLC and an active participant of the Iowa Legal Aid Volunteer Lawyers Project since 1986. He has handled 350 bankruptcy cases in the northeast Iowa area, and devoted almost 2,450 hours to providing legal assistance to low-income Iowans.
  • Tim Tripp, of Tripp, P.C., a disability attorney who has taken on social security cases for the Iowa Legal Aid Volunteer Lawyers Project since 1998. He is known for accepting difficult cases for clients who live in rural parts of Iowa, and has served on Iowa Legal Aid’s Board of Directors.
