Legal Aid's Role in Disaster Relief

October 6, 2017

Following the disasters of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria, people face a large amount of unforeseen legal issues. Legal Services Corporation’s grantees play an important role in disaster reliefs. Legal aid organizations help homeowners qualify for relief aid, prevent foreclosures, and access insurance claims. For example, LSC grantee Lone Star Legal Aid is representing seniors facing eviction in Houston. Lone Star Legal Aid is also helping flood victims apply for FEMA funds, access food stamps, and recover important paperwork lost in the flood. Another grantee, Atlanta Legal Aid Society, partnered with the ABA and FEMA to set up a legal hotline in Georgia with volunteer lawyers helping handle survivors’ cases.
