Atlanta Legal Aid Society seeks Staff Attorney

The Atlanta Legal Aid Society seeks a Staff Attorney to work in its DeKalb County office. The office is a branch of Atlanta Legal Aid Society, Inc., and is located in downtown Decatur. Our non-profit represents low-income persons in a variety of civil legal matters. The staff consists of a managing attorney, 8 staff attorneys, 2 housing navigators, 1 domestic violence navigator, 1 paralegal, and 3 support staff. 

Attorneys in the DeKalb office represent low-income persons in a wide variety of civil law matters, using a variety of methods, including community education, brief service, advice and referral, transactional work, negotiation, mediation, and litigation. The attorneys handle a mixed caseload, including family, housing, consumer, employment, health, public benefits, and education law issues. Attorneys are encouraged to participate in local bar and social service associations. 

Qualifications

Qualified candidates must possess excellent legal writing, oral advocacy, and work ethic. Communication and listening skills, ability to work in a team and alone, adaptability, and appreciation of diversity are required. The ability to balance compassion and pragmatism in representing low-income clients is necessary. A Georgia bar license or eligibility to sit for the next exam is required. Demonstrated commitment to public service, participation in law school clinics, trial advocacy courses, familiarity with areas of poverty law, and previous work with low-income people, are strongly preferred. Fluency in Spanish is highly valued in applicant selection. 

Terms

The salary for a licensed attorney is $55,000+ depending on years of experience. The program provides generous fringe benefits, including paid holidays, paid time off including parental leave; health, life, and long and short-term disability insurance; partial payment for dependent health insurance; a salary reduction option for a flexible spending account; educational loan reimbursement up to $600 per month (after a $65 deductible and set off of other loan reimbursement amounts); voluntary tax-sheltered annuity with 3% match; CLE expenses; and Georgia Bar dues.
