MEDIA ADVISORY: Kentucky Supreme Court Justice to Address LSC Board

Washington, DC -- Justice Lisabeth Hughes Abramson of the Supreme Court of Kentucky is scheduled to address the Board of Directors of the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) on October 18 at a reception for the Board in Louisville, Ky. 

LSC is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation established in 1974 to promote equal access to justice and to ensure high-quality civil legal services are available to low-income Americans. Corporation grants are distributed to 136 nonprofit legal aid programs across the nation, including four in Kentucky-Legal Aid of the Bluegrass, Legal Aid Society, Appalachian Research and Defense Fund of Kentucky and Kentucky Legal Aid.

Justice Abramson will be the keynote speaker at a 5:30 p.m. reception hosted by the four legal aid programs and held at the Louisville Bar Association, 600 West Main Street, Louisville.

At the reception, LSC will honor Kentucky lawyers and law firms for the legal assistance they have provided to low-income individuals and families through pro bono and other volunteer activities. The honorees include Marshall P. Eldred of Louisville, Candy Yarbray Englebert of Owensboro, Ned Pillersdorf of Prestonsburg, William T. Robinson III of Florence, John M. Rosenberg of Prestonsburg and Murry Raines of Bowling Green, and two multi-state law firms, O'Hara, Ruberg, Taylor, Sloan & Sergent, with offices in Northern Kentucky, and Wyatt, Tarrant & Combs, with offices in Louisville.

The LSC Board's agenda also includes a panel discussion on "Access to Justice in Kentucky," scheduled for 12:30 p.m., Oct. 18, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, 320 West Jefferson Street, Louisville. Participants in the panel discussion will include Judge Roger L. Crittenden, interim chair of the Kentucky Access to Justice Commission; Judge Janet L. Stumbo of the Kentucky Court of Appeals; William T. Robinson III, president-elect of the American Bar Association, and Judge James Moyer, U.S. magistrate, Louisville.

The LSC Board will hold committee meetings on October 18 and 19 and a Board of Directors meeting on October 19. The Louisville meeting is the first meeting of the full Board nominated by President Obama and confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
