Veterans Day, 2015: Message from John G. Levi, Chairman, LSC Board of Directors

On Veterans Day we honor the nearly 22 million Americans who have served in our Armed Forces. They guard and protect our freedom both here and abroad, and through their selfless service keep alive the values of our Founding Fathers.

One of those values is equal access to justice, and far too many low- income veterans are being denied that access because they cannot afford a lawyer. Assisting our nation's veterans and military families meet their civil legal needs is one of the most important aspects of LSC's mission--nearly 2 million veterans qualify this year for LSC-funded legal aid on issues such as benefits, housing, domestic and family matters, and employment.

LSC and its grantees across the country support veterans in a number of ways, including launching StatesideLegal.org, the first national website focused on helping veterans and military families;  establishing medical-legal partnerships with veterans’ health centers; operating legal hotlines for veterans; taking part in Stand Down events for homeless veterans; receiving regular referrals from veterans groups, and other outreach and advocacy programs.

On this day, we join our country in recognizing the commitment, service, and sacrifice of our veterans on behalf of us all.

Legal Services Corporation (LSC) is an independent nonprofit established by Congress in 1974. For 50 years, LSC has provided financial support for civil legal aid to low-income Americans. The Corporation currently provides funding to 131 independent nonprofit legal aid programs in every state, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories.
